Top Ten Online Multiplayer Console Games

In some ways the internet has made gaming less personal, but in others has helped and made it so people all around the world can connect and have fun. These are the Top Ten Online Console Games (PC will be getting a list soon). These games are ranked on what they did for online console gaming and how much fun they are or were. Also, I am limiting my selections to one game per franchise. Read more to find out which ten console titles have had a strong impact within the online gaming realm.

10. Phantasy Star Online: Yes, the first console MMO and the most popular online game for the Dreamcast. This game was far ahead of its time. In fact, people are still playing it on private servers to this day.

9. Super Street Fighter 4: Up until this release, online fighting games were a mixed bag. Some were good, some were bad, but none were great. Until SSF4 came along, it gave us everything we wanted: no lag, the ability to make online tournaments, the ability to save and capture replays, and custom lobbies. All of that topped off with excellent balancing.

8. Mech Assault 2 Lone Wolf: The sequel to Xbox Live's premier launch game took everything that game did and added more to it: more players, different mechs, and additional vehicles such as tanks and helicopters. Also, the game had the new party system, at the time, carried over from Halo 2.

7. Killzone 2: The first exclusive FPS that broke through to a more general audience on PS3, Killzone 2 had it all. A solid ranking and class system, tons of quality maps, and a great community combined to create a great online FPS that no fan of the genre should skip out on. The game also featured clan support along with clan battles.

6. Gears of War: The first big hit for Xbox LIVE in a post Halo 2 world, Gears of War was huge. The co-op was perfectly executed, the multiplayer was arcadey, but you still had to use tactics, and up until the release of Halo 3, it was the only game to move ahead of Halo 2 on the Xbox LIVE activity chart.

5. Uncharted 3: What Gears did to bring people online to the 360, Uncharted 3 seems to be doing the same for PS3. No other PS3 exclusive outside of the Killzone games have seen this much activity online. The gameplay is fast and balanced and the verticality of the Uncharted series just adds a whole other element to 3rd person shooting. Then you have co-op and the ability to invite your Facebook friends. Uncharted 3 is the whole package for PS3 fans.

4. LittleBigPlanet 2: Not all great online games have to be about you and your friends murdering hundreds of other people or computer-controlled opponents. Sometimes it is just about creating a level or racing through some crazy obstacle course then slapping your friends at the end.

3. Socom 2: The game that brought many Sony gamers to online was a juggernaut for the PS2. It had plenty of modes, no log even with some players on a 56k connection, and it was so heavily team based, that the headset was a requirement, not a suggestion.

2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: I personally am not a fan of the Modern Warfare franchise, though no one can deny its impact on online gaming for consoles. From almost every shooter having custom loadouts and perks, to shooters with leveling systems, it is crazy what this game started.

1. Halo 2: Now while Reach, ODST, and Halo 3 are all better games, Halo 2 set the standard for which all online console games are held. Matchmaking by the skill level of the party, easy to group up together for custom games or ranked play, stat tracking and constant updates. Also, it was one of the first games to have worthwhile DLC with its map packs. Without Halo 2, who knows where console online games would be.
