From PC game 'MechWarrior Online'.
A decade after the last true MechWarrior video game title saw its release, developer Piranha Games will be coming out with the franchise's revival title MechWarrior Online.
Russ Bullock, President of Piranha Games, says that fans have been not-so-patiently asking for a new MechWarrior title and that giving them what they want on an online format should fit the bill.
"The true way to give MechWarrior life was to be able to spend our budget and spend our development time on an environment that would live on much longer than just a ten-hour single-player campaign," Bullock explained during a closed-door interview with news10.net's Game Guys.
MechWarrior vetarans should find plenty familiar with this new game as a good number of original mechs return, such as the swift Jenner and mighty Atlas, as well as most of the franchise's canon gameplay mechanics. Piranha is stressing, though, that the player is no longer playing as the mech itself and is instead taking a role more akin to that of the mech pilot. This is furthered by giving players an in-cockpit view complete with controls and heads-up displays while playing.
Much like in the original MechWarrior games, players will be set up in lances (groups of mech pilots), thogh MechWarrior Online's skirmishes will be set-up as 12v12 three-team battles. While all of the mechs found in any given lance will likely have a good assortment of weaponry and auxiliary components, the game is being designed so that teamwork will a lance's most vital asset.
"If you want to have information, you'll need a scout to go out there and find it." said Bullock. "No longer do we have the days of just hitting the cycle key and cycle through all of targets on the map and you'll have all the information you'll need as to where they are."
While the developers are busy at work on the game, MechWarrior Online is nearing a closed beta session in the coming weeks with an open beta session planned for Summer 2012.
