A remarkable 10 wickets fell in the final session on day one of the second Test as New Zealand slumped against South Africa.
New Zealand had looked in control as they reached 133-2 during a rain-affected day in Hamilton.
However Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander ripped the heart out of the home side's innings - with five wickets falling for no runs in a disastrous 20-ball spell as they collapsed to 185 all out.
South Africa, though, didn't have things their own way as Chris Martin removed both Graeme Smith and nightwatchman Steyn as the tourists reached 27-2 at stumps.
After being asked to bat in Hamilton, a combination of rain and the partnership of Brendon McCullum (61) and Ross Taylor (44) were holding the Proteas at bay after the hosts had lost their openers early.
But Steyn (3-49) removed McCullum with the score on 133 and another four wickets fell without a run being scored to devastate the New Zealand line-up, with Philander taking 4-70.
The Black Caps lost Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill on a difficult morning which saw Philander and Steyn take one wicket apiece.
Nicol was first to go in the sixth over, fishing at a shortish delivery from Philander and edging to Mark Boucher.
Anti-climax
Guptill and McCullum looked to be forming a useful partnership before the opener was bowled by Steyn off the inside edge for 22.
Captain Taylor joined McCullum at the crease but boundaries were few and far between as the pair attempted to avoid further damage.
They reached the interval on 62-2 with McCullum on 26 and Taylor on 11.
Taylor hit successive boundaries off Philander in the first over after lunch as the pair started to get on top of the bowling a little more.
But less than 10 overs had been played in the session when the rain came and tea was eventually called.
If the second session was an anti-climax, the third was anything but.
McCullum pulled Morne Morkel for six to pass 50, but mistimed a similar shot off Steyn and found Jacques Rudolph at square leg.
Taylor followed in the next over, edging Philander to Smith at slip, before Kane Williamson, Daniel Vettori and Doug Bracewell all departed without adding a run.
Kruger van Wyk and Mark Gillespie added 43 for the eighth wicket, but once Van Wyk was trapped leg before by Morkel, New Zealand had little more to give.
Wicketkeeper Van Wyk then produced a brilliant catch to dismiss Smith as the wickets continued to tumble once South Africa began their reply, and a more routine effort to see off Steyn.
