Book one left me longing for more pieces of the story. Book two left me in shocked silence. Book three finally answered all my questions. Even if you can't finish the Hunger Games before you see the smash movie hit, peers, I URGE you: READ THE SERIES ANYWAY! This dramatic, violent, romantic, adventurous tale will attract even those who would rather eat a brick than read. Now, enough book talk. Let's get into the motion picture. Most of you have probably watched "The Hunger Games" commercials on TV and seen the amazing cast. But for newbies, the first person you need to know is Katniss Everdeen. Played by Jennifer Laurence, the main character of the Hunger Games is really a great choice (after she dyed her hair, that is). Then there's Josh Hutcherson, the charming young man who plays Peeta, one of Katniss's love interests. You also should know about Gale, who makes up the third branch of the Katniss-Peeta-Gale love triangle. Liam Hemsworth does a fantastic job as Gale-- with his natural hair color.
And now the moment we've all been waiting for! Roll film!
The setting is Panem, a future country consisting of 12 districts and a tyrant head city, called the Capitol. As a reminder to the districts of a previous uprising against the Capitol that caused so much loss of life, "Each district will send two tributes, one boy and one girl, to the custody of the Capitol. They will then be placed in an arena to fight to the death. Only one victor will remain." So why, you may ask, is this event called the Hunger Games? The winner's district gets a year's supply of free food. Which, in districts like 12, is very much needed.
When it's time for the tributes' names to be drawn, everyone gathers in the center of the district, the Square. Effie Trinket, the district 12 Capitol representative, says, "Ladies first," and pulls a slip out of the drawing bowl. "Primrose Everdeen." (Katniss's little sister.) As Katniss sees her sister approach Effie, she bravely volunteers to take her place. Katniss's best friend and hunting partner, Gale, has to drag Prim away from Katniss's ankles. Next the boy tribute is drawn, and the victim is Peeta Mellark, the son of the local baker.
Here's where the real action starts.... The fighting arena! This year's arena is a vast forest landscape. Perfect for Katniss, right? Well, let's just say it's not fun and games, even if you grew up exploring in a similar terrain. A bell announces the official start of the 74th Hunger Games, and... It's ON. From the beginning, alliances are formed. A group of tributes that had trained all their lives for this make it their goal to hunt down Katniss, who has been targeted due her score of eleven in her pre-games training session.
Ok, so the arena is pretty violent. But the movie actually doesn't show many blade-flesh collisions. Before a spear collides with a girl, the camera shows us the girl's face rather than the stab. The next time we see the spear, it's already inside the tribute. So... be prepared for death in this movie. However, there are certainly some heart-warming moments in the forest. While hiding in a tree, Katniss meets Rue, a clever 12-year-old. The two form a bond. I can't tell you much more about what happens in the arena... because what happens in the arena...stays in the arena. You'll have to see the movie for yourself!
I'm not going to lie... "The Hunger Games" finale is shocking, dramatic, and full of action! The bad word count is pretty low with only a few d**ns and h**ls. Overall, I personally give "The Hunger Games" 10 out of 5 stars for staying true to the book while including tolerable violence, a dash of humor, just enough romance, and globs of action. But I don't recommend this movie to anyone under 6th grade unless they have read the book and had no major problems handling the intensity. Lovers of the book and lovers of action in general: see the movie, seriously!!!!!!!! Happy 74th Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
