With no Cinderella, CBS NCAA title game TV rating down 9% - USA TODAY (blog)
Apr 3rd 2012, 15:38

Without a Cinderella in the NCAA title game -- a role Butler played the past two years -- CBS' Kentucky-Kansas game Monday drew 12.3% of U.S. households.

That's up 5% from last year's poorly-played Connecticut-Butler game but down 3% from Duke-Butler in 2010.

Monday's game might leave CBS/Turner's coverage, in which viewers could watch each game in its entirety, with ratings a bit above CBS' old 2010 regionalized coverage, in which viewers were assigned games. Heading into Monday's game, CBS/Turner's overall ratings were down 5% from last year and up 4% from 2010.

Predictably, CBS' rating peaked in the games final minutes and the top local TV ratings came in Louisville (51.1%) and Kansas City (39.2%).

Spice rack: Jim Nantz, who sometimes comes up with one-liners at the end of NCAA title games that sound like he's rehearsed them, stayed simple Monday with his "Kentucky coronation completed" call. But then, he might have been distracted. On a conference call Monday, Nantz said he thinks about The Masters literally every day of the year. Well, almost every day: "This might be the one day of the year when I have to think about something else more than Augusta." Really. ... Texas Rangers have a ballpark suite that got a reality TV show makeover.
